“The pen is mightier than the sword.”
Benjamin Franklin

Have you ever gotten lost in a good book?

Or been urged into action by a great speech?

Or reduced to tears by a bewitching tale?

If so, you recognize how powerful exquisitely communicated language can be…  The “right” words can soothe our souls, cause us to curl up in laughter, evoke horrifying thoughts and remind us of better times.  They can bridge gaps between divergent cultures, reinforce strong emotions, and take us on journeys of the mind.  Anything is possible… as long as it’s communicated well.

But, therein lies the problem. Exceptional writing skills are hard earned and possessed by a only small minority of people. Ironically, however, the written word is the most popular “go-to” communications vehicle in the world.

Given this, why do so many companies leave theirs to chance and alienate, or worse yet, bore their target audience with marketing copy that is poorly written?

Why would any businessperson risk being perceived as incompetent due to sales letters, proposals, or presentations filled with grammatical errors, typos, run-on sentences or misused phrases?

Let’s face it… if your words do not help you build genuine and sincere relationships with your prospects and customers or project a professional image, you’re in trouble.

So, before you decide to give it a try and write your own website copy, ads or brochures, book proposal, e-zine, or how-to guide, stop and ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you a skilled writer?
  • Do you enjoy writing?
  • Do you have an opportunity to practice writing often?
  • Do you have the time to write excellent copy?
  • Are you careful to edit everything completely?

If you answer “yes” to these questions, you’re good to go.  If not, please get help from a skilled and practiced writer. If you’re lucky, a friend or family member can assist you… just make sure they’re truly qualified. Alternatively, you should consider hiring a professional – someone who will focus on your project, get it completed on time, and within your budget.
