The answer to that question isn’t simple and is best related with this true story…
After spending many years working in corporate America, we decided to get off of the Fortune 500 corporate merry-go-round and build a consultancy which helped small and medium-sized businesses and organizations improve their marketing efforts.
After working for several months with one particularly lost customer we became frustrated… no matter how we tried they weren’t “getting it.” Although they were very intelligent people who were trying their best, they still didn’t understand how to improve their marketing efforts on their own. Nothing seemed to be “sinking in” and we were baffled. Their business continued to be plagued with financial crises, systems challenges and people problems… the chaos continued.
Then it dawned on us… they were confused because they were missing “the big picture,” and it was our fault. Instead of proactively transferring our expertise to them, we were telling them what to do without teaching them along the way. No wonder they couldn’t do anything on their own!
Once we took a step back we realized that our own marketing expertise was not a part of our birthright… We had acquired our skills and knowledge after 25+ years of experience; tens of thousands of dollars in advanced education; and countless hours of additional research and instruction.
And while we recognized that our education and time spent “in the trenches” had served us well both personally and professionally, we finally understood that our clients didn’t have 25 years and thousands of dollars to spend to “get there.”
So, we began looking for ways to make this happen… Our goal was to come up with a way to arm our clients with the tools and know-how they needed to solve their marketing problems without us! We weren’t interested in providing the bogus “quick fixes” many had come to expect… rather, we were searching for a solid, trustworthy, practical, affordable and convenient venue to educate our customers.
The result? We invested nine months of our time learning, researching and writing a comprehensive marketing book, The Procrastinator’s Guide to Marketing (Entrepreneur Press, November, 2007). Gratefully, those who have already reviewed the manuscript tell us that it’s been an invaluable resource and they especially appreciate how we’ve presented complex concepts in a profoundly simple manner.
